Gypsy and Traveller Diversity Training

Lincolnshire Gypsy Liaison Group was formed in 2005, following requests for assistance and support both from the Travelling community and from service providers within the county. Its management team is made up of community members. We now have an every increasing membership from across the region.

We work in the areas of family support, education, health, accommodation, prison support, and challenging racism and prejudice. We advise government on the communities needs and work with them to plan policy and legislation in which the rights of all members of society are equally recognised.

Almost immediately we were approached by various organisations who felt that their staff team and their service would be further empowered and effective if they could either furnish them with a basic working knowledge of the community or increase their existing knowledge in a specialist subject pertinent to their field of work.

Some service providers had received training from sources such as Education or County Council but they expressed the view that as this information was second or third hand and often academic rather than authentic.

We decided to offer training supplied by experienced members of the Travelling community who were ideally placed to speak from the community’s perspective.
They had had direct experience of the many issues involved and could relate authentically on a much more personal level. In essence they were experts in their own field.

Trainers were selected who had worked in the training field for many years and whose evaluations evidenced that they had a lot to offer and were successful and effective in their work.

Those individuals continue to be supported to update both their skills and their knowledge so that they can deliver relevant, accurate, informed material as professionally and interestingly as possible.

The Gypsy and Traveller community is the largest Ethnic group in Europe. The law as it relates to them is complex and constantly changing, as are the communities needs which are often quite a challenge for service providers.

We would welcome the chance to share with you some of what we have learned over the years. We have worked with a wide variety of organisations, both large and small. This includes the Police, Ambulance service, Teaching staff, Prison Staff, Health Visitors, Schools, Library staff, Probation Service, University students, Health care providers, Sure Start, WLDC employees, ELDC employees, SKDC employees, Environment Agency, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Local Radio  Planning dept staff, etc. Please contact our training team for further information and to discuss your requirements in further detail.
